Filtros de Sedimento: Guía Completa para Elegir el Correcto

Sediment Filters: A Complete Guide to Choosing the Right One

If your water system has issues with sand, rust, sludge, or sediment, the first step is to choose the correct filtration cartridge. Not all filters are the same: each type has a specific material, micron rating, and ideal use. In this guide, we'll explain the differences simply so you can make the best decision for your home, business, or industrial project. There are 5 main types of sediment filters:

  String Wound
Melt-Blown
Pleated
Bag
Mesh

1. String Wound Filter

Polypropylene string wound layer by layer onto a central core, creating a large filtration surface.

When to use it? Ideal for general residential use, water with moderate turbidity, and when you're looking for a balance between price and performance. Its wide micron range makes it versatile for both coarse pre-filtration and fine filtration.

2. Melt Blown Filter

Polypropylene microfibers fused into a single block, without an internal core, with filtration by density gradient.

When to use it? Ideal as a standard sediment filter for residential use, pre-filtration before reverse osmosis or UV, and when you're looking for a good cost-benefit ratio with high flow.

3. Pleated Filter

Polyester fabric folded accordion-style, which multiplies the available filtration area.

When to use it? Perfect when you need good sediment retention with low-pressure drop and longer life between changes, or as an intermediate filter before more delicate systems (reverse osmosis, UV).

4. Washable Mesh Filter (Surface Filtration)

Polypropylene or stainless steel frame with a mesh that retains sediment on the surface and is cleaned by backwash.

When to use it? Excellent for water with medium to coarse sediments (sand, rust, scale) when you want to reduce replacements and waste. Widely used in self-cleaning systems and well or surface water with constant sediment.

5. Bag Filter

Polypropylene filter bag that is installed inside a housing and retains sediment directly within it.

When to use it? Recommended for residential, commercial, and industrial applications with high sediment volume, well or rainwater with particles of different sizes, and when you seek to minimize maintenance frequency.
