Lighting a pool isn't just about installing a powerful lamp on any wall. To know how to properly light a pool with LEDs, you need to combine electrical safety, light distribution, lining type, depth, and ease of maintenance. A good installation allows you to see the bottom clearly, reduces dark areas, and improves nighttime use without excessive power consumption.
In residential and commercial pools, LEDs have largely replaced traditional spotlights due to their lower power demand, long lifespan, and the ability to incorporate white light or color changes. However, choosing the spotlight is only one part of the system: the niche, transformer, wiring, electrical panel, and sealing must all be compatible with each other.
How to light a pool with LED: start with the design
Before choosing watts or colors, it's a good idea to define what you expect from the lighting. Lighting a 4 x 8 meter concrete pool for family use is not the same as lighting a hotel pool, an infinity pool, or an installation with steps, a submerged bench, and a beach area. The geometry determines how many light points are needed and where they should be placed.
The most useful visual reference is to prevent swimmers from looking directly at the spotlight from the usual access, rest, or outdoor dining area. Therefore, spotlights are usually oriented towards the house or the least used side of the pool. The light bounces off the water and the lining, illuminating the volume without being bothersome.
In a small rectangular pool, two opposing spotlights or placed on the same side can work well, depending on the finish and the surroundings. In longer pools, with irregular shapes, or with wide steps, it may be necessary to distribute several spotlights to eliminate shadows. Installing a single spotlight of excessive power rarely provides a uniform result.
The lining changes the perception of light
The color of the interior finish influences as much as the power. A white or light blue mosaic reflects more light and usually requires less intensity to achieve visibility. Dark linings, natural stone, gray reinforced liner, or black finishes absorb some of the light and may require greater luminous flux or more lighting points.
It is also advisable to separate functional lighting from decorative lighting. A white LED spotlight facilitates visibility of the bottom, cleaning, and supervision of swimmers. RGB spotlights provide ambiance and allow for scene creation, but they do not always replace sufficient white lighting. For a frequently used pool, the combination of functional white light and optional color is usually the most practical solution.
Safety voltage, transformer, and electrical protection
The critical part of any submerged installation is the power supply. LED pool lights typically operate at a very low safety voltage, for example 12 V, supplied by a suitable transformer. A pool light should not be connected directly to the mains.
The transformer must be sized for the total installed load and leave a reasonable margin. If four 18 W luminaires are installed, the theoretical power is 72 W; a higher capacity transformer will prevent it from working permanently at its limit. It is also necessary to verify whether the manufacturer requires alternating or direct current, as not all LED lights accept the same power supply.
The control panel must incorporate the electrical protections corresponding to the installation. The manipulation of connections, transformers, junction boxes, or circuits near water must be carried out by a qualified installer, respecting the applicable electrical regulations. Saving money at this stage can lead to recurrent tripping, premature breakdowns, or a real risk to users.
The distance between the transformer, junction box, and pool is also not improvised. The wiring must follow the planned route, be protected, and have sufficient cross-section to limit voltage drop. When the cable is too long or thin, an LED light can lose intensity, show color differences, or function unstably.
Choosing LED lights compatible with the pool
A submersible light must have a watertightness level suitable for permanent immersion, typically IP68, and be specifically designed for swimming pools. A garden LED light with a similar appearance is not a valid alternative: it cannot withstand the same conditions of pressure, chlorine, salt, humidity, and temperature.
Mechanical compatibility is equally relevant. In a concrete pool, recessed niches can be used, while in a renovation, a flat surface projector may be more suitable. Prefabricated pools, liner pools, or fiberglass pools may require specific accessories and gaskets to ensure sealing without damaging the pool shell.
Before purchasing, check the diameter of the existing niche, the type of fastening, the length of the supplied cable, the working voltage, and the control system. If you are replacing an old lamp, confirm whether the new LED uses the current niche or if an adapter is needed. This information prevents incompatible orders and additional work in the middle of the season.

Fixed white, RGB or RGBW
The choice of color depends on the use. Fixed white is simple, efficient and suitable when the priority is to illuminate for swimming, monitor water quality or improve safety. RGB models allow you to select colors and effects, usually by remote control, sequential switch or external controller.
RGBW systems add a specific white channel. This usually offers a more usable white light than that obtained by mixing colors, although the initial cost may be higher. If the project seeks a specific aesthetic for a tourist accommodation, restaurant or high-use nightlife establishment, scene control may justify the investment. In a simple domestic pool, a quality white LED usually solves the main need with fewer elements to maintain.
Location and height of the projectors
Spotlights are typically installed below the waterline, at a height that allows them to illuminate the bottom and walls without being exposed if the water level drops slightly. The exact position depends on the model, the niche, and the pool construction. The manufacturer's and installation project's instructions must be followed.
In addition to the main spotlights, steps deserve attention. A poorly lit submerged staircase can be more problematic than a deep area with low light. Instead of placing conventional spotlights pointing directly at users, compact luminaires or indirect lighting solutions compatible with wet and submerged areas can be used.
In pools with overflow, very dark water sheets, or high walls, the visual effect often requires more planning. The lighting must also consider the reflection on windows, terraces, and security cameras. A technically correct project can be uncomfortable if it causes glare in areas where users are sitting.
Installation: details that prevent breakdowns
The quality of the seal defines the durability of the installation. Gaskets, cable glands, covers, and connection boxes must be clean, free of sand, adhesive residue, or deformations. The spotlight cable must not be cut or spliced inside the pool unless the system and regulations explicitly allow it.
After installing the luminaires, check that they all light up with the same intensity and that the RGB models respond synchronously. Before completely filling the pool or closing linings, it is advisable to test the circuit, transformer, and control system. Detecting an incorrect connection at that moment is much more economical than intervening later.
To maintain performance, periodically clean the surface of the spotlight and avoid abrasive products on the lens. If a luminaire loses intensity, water enters, changes color randomly, or trips the protection, disconnect the circuit and have the installation checked by a professional. It is not advisable to continue using a spotlight with signs of condensation or cable damage.
