How to choose a submersible pump without oversizing

A pump that slowly fills a tank, trips on overload, or consumes more than expected has usually been chosen for its power, not its hydraulic needs. To know how to choose a submersible pump, you need to start with three pieces of information: what liquid will be moved, what flow rate is needed, and what head the equipment must work against. Power in HP or kW is a consequence of these requirements, not the only purchasing criterion.
A correct selection avoids two common problems. An insufficient pump will not reach the required flow rate or pressure. An oversized pump can cause frequent starts, higher consumption, premature wear, and a more expensive installation than necessary.
How to choose a submersible pump according to the application
The first filter is always the application. Not all submersible pumps are designed for the same type of water, nor do they accept the same particle size. Installing a clean water pump in a drainage well with waste can clog the impeller; using a light dewatering pump to supply a home from a deep well will not offer the necessary pressure.
For clean water in cisterns, reservoirs, wells, or reserve tanks, multi-stage submersible pumps or well pumps are suitable. They are prepared to pump water with a low presence of solids and, depending on the model, can supply enough pressure for a home, an irrigation system, or several consumption points. In these cases, it is also important to assess compatibility with a pressure switch, a pressure controller, or a variable frequency drive if more stable pressure is desired.
To empty basements, manholes, elevator pits, collection tanks, or flood-prone areas, the choice is usually a drainage or dewatering pump. The decisive factor is the free passage of solids: it indicates the maximum diameter of particles that the pump can pass without blockage. For water with sludge, fibers, organic matter, or sanitary waste, a dirty water or wastewater pump is needed, and in certain installations, a version with a grinder.
There are also specific equipment for swimming pools, fountains, or ponds, although it is important to differentiate recirculation pumping from dewatering. A pool filtration pump works within a hydraulic circuit with a filter and valves; a submersible drainage pump is used to empty or evacuate water. They are not interchangeable even if both move water.
Flow rate: how much water the pump should move
The flow rate is normally expressed in liters per minute, liters per hour, or cubic meters per hour. The appropriate figure depends on the actual use, not a generic estimate. To dewater a manhole, the volume that enters during a rain or during the operation of equipment matters. To fill a tank, how long you are willing to wait matters. To supply an installation, the planned simultaneous consumption matters.
A residential system with several bathrooms, a kitchen, a washing machine, and irrigation does not require the same flow rate as a home with occasional occupancy. Similarly, a construction site may need to evacuate a high flow rate occasionally, while a well for irrigation may work for several hours with a moderate and constant flow rate.
It is not enough to look at the maximum flow rate indicated in the technical sheet. This value usually corresponds to a very low delivery head. As the pump has to lift water or overcome losses in the piping, the available flow rate decreases. That is why the manufacturer's hydraulic curve is the document that allows verifying if the equipment delivers the required flow rate at the actual operating point.
Head: the data that prevents the most errors
The total head represents the resistance that the pump must overcome. It includes the vertical elevation difference between the water level and the discharge point, but it does not end there. The length of the piping, the diameter, elbows, valves, filters, reducers, and the necessary pressure at the final point also play a role.
If a pump extracts water from a well and sends it to a tank located 20 meters higher, those 20 meters are only the approximate static head. A long pipe with a reduced diameter can add significant losses. If sprinklers are also to be supplied or pressure is to be maintained in an internal network, that service pressure must be added to the total head.
As a reference, 1 bar is approximately equivalent to 10 meters of water column. Therefore, an installation that requires 2 useful bar at the destination needs about 20 additional meters of head, in addition to the elevation difference and head losses. This conversion guides the calculation, but the final selection must always be verified with the pump curve.
It is preferable to size with a reasonable small margin, not with excessive power. A 10 to 15% margin in head can compensate for pipe variations, progressive fouling, or small installation changes. Doubling the pump's capacity unnecessarily does not provide safety: it can shift operation to an inefficient point.
How to choose a submersible pump: data that must match
Once the flow rate and head are defined, the installation configuration must be reviewed. The voltage and power supply type must match the available network: single-phase or three-phase, as well as the voltage and frequency specified by the manufacturer. In professional installations, a three-phase pump may be suitable due to its behavior at high powers and the available control options. In domestic applications, single-phase power usually simplifies installation, provided the required power allows it.
The discharge outlet must be compatible with the existing piping or with the piping to be installed. Reducing the discharge diameter too much increases water velocity and head losses. A well-calculated pump can perform poorly if it discharges through a pipe that is too narrow or has a path full of changes in direction.
It is also advisable to check the maximum immersion depth, the permissible liquid temperature, and the equipment's protection rating. In a deep well, the cable length and the pump's position must allow it to be kept away from the bottom to avoid aspirating sand or sediment. If the water level can drop, dry running must be prevented using a float switch, level probes, or compatible electronic protection.
In drainage pumps, the float switch deserves a specific review. It must have enough space to move without getting trapped against a wall, a pipe, or the bottom of the manhole. When space is limited or very precise start and stop control is needed, external level sensors may be more suitable.
Materials, maintenance, and water conditions
The water composition determines the pump's lifespan. Water with sand, salinity, chemicals, extreme pH, or high temperature requires compatible materials and seals. A stainless steel body can offer good resistance in certain applications, but it does not replace the need to confirm the chemical compatibility of the specific model.
In wells and tanks, excessive sand intake wears impellers and mechanical seals. The solution may require raising the pump from the bottom, installing a cooling jacket in certain wells, or improving the intake. In wastewater, preventive maintenance should include inspection of the impeller chamber, the float, check valves, and possible accumulations of grease or fibers.
The check valve is especially useful when the water column could return to the pump when it stops. However, it must be chosen and installed in a way that does not add unnecessary head loss or complicate maintenance tasks. In a pumping station with several pumps, the manifold, isolation valves, and control panel are also part of the solution, not secondary accessories.
